The NFL’s only undefeated team, San Francisco 49ers (8-0) is heading into what many say is its toughest challenge this season, hosting the Seattle Seahawks (7-2) for Monday Night Football. This is certainly going to be one of the best clashes of the whole 2019 NFL season. So we certainly crown it as the highlight of Week 10.
So, we are actually looking at a match between Seattle’s Quarterback and San Francisco’s defense, who will come on top this Monday?
The 49ers are still considered the home favourites by most. And again, with the 49ers it’s all about defense. In the narrow 28-25 road win at Arizona Cardinals on week 9, the 49ers defense allowed the most points it did all season. Prior to that, they didn’t allow more than 20 points per game, and have allowed only 36 points in their last three home games.
So week 9 was an exception, as San Francisco’s defense is second in scoring defense and opponents’ yards per play after the New England Patriots. And nobody in the league allows less yards than the 49ers.
Hosts 49ers have been showing the league’s best defensive line this season with only 12.8 points allowed per game (vs. Seahawks’ 25.6). But the visitors have the lethal weapon in their arsenal, QB Russel Wilson, who’s arguably the best NFL player this season overall, with a 68.3 completion for 2,505 yards, 22 touchdowns and only 1 interception.
Wilson is the NFL leading passer with 118.2 yards. The Seahawks were blocked in 16 points in one game this season (losing 30-16 to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 7). But other than that one bad gig, Russel Wilson posted in every game this season a triple-digit yard-passer rating, and the Seahawks scored more than 20 points per game.
San Francisco’s QB Jimmy Garoppolo has a 70.8% completion rate for 1,806 yards. He threw this season 13 touchdowns and 7 interceptions (compared to Wilson’s 22 TDs and 1 turnover). So Garoppolo cannot rely only on the 49ers iron-curtain defense, and will have to pull out of the back a few great throws to keep up with Wilson on the opposite sideline.
Russel Wilson will make San Francisco work hard, and will give the Seahawks a chance for an upset. But we predict the 49ers should come out of this match undefeated, still.
Final Score: San Francisco 49ers to Win 26-23, but not cover the spread.
